UNITED STATES CENSUS BUREAU HEADQUARTERS
Scroll for Details
DETAILS
Federal headquarters sized for 3,000 census workers, swelling to 6,000 during the decennial census. Includes a bank, library, cafeteria, auditorium, and conference center. The building incorporates 3 half-acre rooftop gardens (on levels 2, 3, and 5), and employs domestic white oak sunshading blades to manage heat gain on the long east-west façades mandated by the site’s shape. The blades have been designed as camouflage to blend in with the adjacent woodland preserve, which has been extended to rise up and over/through the building center, and becomes a courtyard amenity path marked by artist commissions.
